Following the recent detection of Red Imported Fire Ants (RIFA) on Borneo Barracks, Defence has implemented additional biosecurity controls to prevent the spread of fire ants from the site and to ensure compliance with current biosecurity requirements.

Effective immediately and until further notice, privately owned golf carts are not permitted to enter Borneo Barracks. Due to the biosecurity risks associated with vehicle movements and soil transfer, no exemptions will be granted.

In addition, the following requirements apply:

• All vehicles attending the golf course must park on bitumen or other sealed surfaces only.

• Vehicles must not be parked on grassed or unsealed areas.

• Any movement of equipment such as mowers or lawn maintenance equipment, on, off or between sites must be undertaken in accordance with approved biosecurity controls - Checking equipment and machinery for fire ants | National Fire Ant Eradication Program

• A Biosecurity Instrument Permit will be required before any declared fire ant carrier is removed from the base. This permit must also be approved by the Base Manager.

• Fire ant carriers include, but are not limited to, soil, sand, aggregates, gravel, turf, mulch, potted plants and other landscaping materials.

No fire ant carriers are to be removed from Borneo Barracks without the appropriate permit and approvals.

These controls are mandatory and will remain in place until further notice. Defence's priority is to support eradication activities and ensure compliance with all biosecurity obligations.
